All the dumb, half the smart.

Today was cool. I got to feel the wrath of plate tectonics. There was an earthquake in central California this morning. For those interested (probably just Mike), the U.S. Geological Survey link is here. That site is really cool. All that info is updated automatically. As soon as the quake was over I went to that site and the information was already there. The only difference was that before it said “This information has not been reviewed by a seismologist.” The gist is: Magnitude 6.0, about 150 miles southeast of Menlo Park.
So there I was being a good little code prophet when all of the sudden I start feeling dizzy and a little queasy. Then from the other cubes I hear people saying, “Do you feel that? I think we’re having an earthquake.” Needless to say by the time the vibrations reached Menlo Park, they weren’t any where near 6.0. I never felt any motion or saw anything move. Essentially I felt the effects of motion without actually noticing that I was moving, which is probably why I just felt dizzy and queasy. Sarah, who felt in it San Francisco, described it as “feeling wavy.” It reminds of one of the many great Ralph Wiggum quotes from The Simpsons: “Principal Skinner, I got car sick in your office.”

This weekend I went to get my haircut at a local Ultra/Super/Pro Cuts. I can never remember which it is. Anyway, my haircut is always simple. I ask them to use the clippers and use a number 1 on the sides and a number 2 or number 3 on the top. When it was my turn, I got this happy smiling Vietnamese guy probably in his mid thirties named Minh (I think). So he’s about done with my hair and he starts to make conversation:
Minh: Is that your girlfriend over there?
Me: Yea.
Minh: Ah, she real pretty. You’re lucky guy.
Me: Thanks.
Minh: So you two have big plans tonight? Going to go to parties?
Me: Well, probably not. We’re probably just going to watch a movie.
Minh: Ah, you’re lucky guy. I have nothing.
Me: What??
Minh: You’re lucky. I have nothing.
Me: What do you mean?
Minh: My wife is in Vietnam.
Me: Why don’t you bring her here?
Minh: I can’t, I have to wait five years until I can (something, something, I’m not sure what he said).
Me: 5 years?
Minh: Yea, it’s a long time. I can’t wait that long.
Me: Wow, that sucks.
Minh: I need to find a temporary.
Me: I don’t know about that.
Minh: Don’t you think? I need to find a temporary. Five years is too long.
Me: I don’t think that’s a good idea.
Minh: You don’t think so? Five years.
Me: I don’t think you’re wife will think it’s a good idea.
Minh: But it’s too long. I need a temporary.
After that he finished my hair and showed me the back of my head in the mirror, just like the barbers always do. We went over to the register to so he could ring me up. Minh commented on my hair being so short and I told him it’s because I like to have a zero maintenance hairstyle. He laughed, reached over the counter, rubbed my head and said, “You look like the Buddha.”

This has been a very food oriented past few days.
At the beginning of September, my first round project as a n00b was over and I started my second round. The new group I’m in now just recently had a major release so on Friday they celebrated by taking the whole team out for Indian food buffet. Lucky for me, since I love that stuff. I also like enjoying the benefits of all that hard work that I had nothing to do with.
On Saturday I finally got to eat some real chile con queso. By real, I mean not Chili’s. There is this chain called On the Border and there was one pf them in Milpitas, close to the insanity mall that we go to sometimes. And now today, Sarah and I went to this place called Mountain Mike’s Pizza for some pizza buffet. It was no Mr. Gatti’s but it was still pretty good.
Another cool thing about this weekend is that it was pretty cold the whole time. I had to go and buy pajamas. Yay! Jammy-jams.
After watching the US Open last week (or whenever it was) Sarah and I got in the mood to play some tennis. So we went and did that last week and we’ll probably start doing it a lot more. I really suck at tennis. And even though Sarah pwn3d me at it, at least I never knocked any of the tennis balls out of the court.

Yesterday was my brother’s birthday. He turned 23. I don’t know why I didn’t make a post about it yesterday. Actually it’s probably because I’m crappy brother. But oh well, to make up for my crappyness, I’m making a post now and including a fantastic picture of Rob. Like the other picture of my other brother, this picture was chosen completely at random.

Speaking of birthday’s, yesterday was also Google’s 6th birthday as you probably saw from the logo on their main page.
Happy birthday Rob and Google.

I got my new California driver’s license in the mail today. I was going to post a picture of it but I decided that wouldn’t be the best idea. It’s kind of weird because Sarah didn’t get hers. But then again, she got her voter registration card a week ago and I have yet to get mine.
In other news, Lisa is coming to visit over the holiday weekend. Sarah is going to pick her up at the airport tomorrow at 8:30 in the morning. Visitors are cool (hint, hint, family members and supposed friends).
I’ve been working a lot of overtime lately. Not necessarily because I need to, but because I can. In 6 weeks my “training” program will be over and I will go from being an hourly employee to salary. Plus I have plenty to do there so it’s not like I’m sitting up there bored. Also, since Sarah has kind of a long commute, it usually works out to where we get home around the same time if I stay late.
For those of you that like it when I post pictures, here is a picture of my brother, that I chose at random.
